Fin des années 1980. Que ce passe-t-il lorsque Robyn Penrose, une jeune sémiologue brittanique, spécialiste du roman industriel victorien se trouve brusquement confrontée à la réalité de ce monde indutriel, à sa brutalité, à son cynisme ? Et que se passe-t-il encore, lorsque le patron d'une usine, Vic Wilcox, se trouve confronté, lui, à ce regard extérieur ? Le roman de David Lodge est le récit de cette confrontation, qui se transforme, petit à petit en jeu de séduction. Pas manichéen et résolument humoristique, qu'on en juge par la scène inaugurale ou le patron se réveille tôt aux côté de son épouse encore endormie sur Bien vivre sa ménopause, un livre emprunté à une amie des Weight Watchers.
Restent de la lecture de grandes interrogations sur le rôle de la littérature et celui de l'homme dans la société moderne (évidemment, c'est moins gai dit comme ça). Jeu de société, mais aussi jeu de miroir ou jeu de dupes... La réalité n'est jamais si simple qu'on voudrait nous le faire croire.

10000 fois d'accord avec cette chronique…
Pour ma part, j'ai dévoré deux fois ce livre qui m'a fait hurler de rire un bon nombre de fois. C'est écrit avec un humour décapant et on se retrouve à apprécier les deux protagonistes que tout oppose. Bref,, si vous êtes d'humeur morose, c'est le truc à lire dans son RER blême du matin… Attention à ne pas rater votre correspondance !
